My biggest tip for a teacher who is dealing with a challenging student is to figure out a way to like them.
In my experience, kids often behave differently around teachers that they perceive as “liking” them.
“If I don’t have a future, what difference does it make what I do with the present?”
This is seriously what some of our students may be thinking.
It is imperative that we give our students hope.
I remember my 17 year old telling me about how much he appreciated his AP teacher who always allowed students to make HW and test corrections.
He told me: “She said it doesn’t matter when we get it… as long as we get it.”
Teaching is hard enough, but almost unbearable when you feel unfulfilled, and undervalued. It's so important to treat staff in such a way that they want to stay and be their best!
