Freshman football season has come to a close. I’ve learned so much this year from the upperclassmen and I’m so grateful. But I’m hungry for more! #biggerfasterstronger https://t.co/MMjxDqUoUe

Q & A with Coach Jason Burton
Question 1
With spring drills mostly now complete, what is your overall team/program focus as you turn the page to the summer months and final 2026 season prep?
Response:
June was a busy, but productive, month for our Panther Athletes. As a football program, we went three days a week all June. We focused on strength & speed work, along with base install of schematics on both sides of the ball. Many of our athletes are incredibly busy in June, with our workouts, other sport workouts (wrestling, basketball, travel baseball) as well as 70% of our roster working summer jobs. Despite the hectic schedules, we saw tremendous growth from many, grew as a 26' team, and are looking forward to attacking the July calendar.
Question 2
Offensively, who are your top returning starters and what players have shown in the offseason that they are ready and able to step into full-time varsity action?
Response:
Brady Franks (Jr.) Returns as the starting QB for his 3rd season (took over half way through freshman year). Brady has had a very good spring and June, improving as a passer, with an already high level of Athleticism in the run game. Brady is primed for a great Junior Season.
Andrew Maschino (Sr.) Looks to step into a more prominent role in the backfield, after spending much of his career focused on defense. Maschino has had a great offseason in the weight room, getting stronger and faster, and has the potential for a very good season.
In the trenches, our entire offensive Line had a fantastic winter and spring training cycle. We will be anchored by 4 year starter Cooper Lane at Guard. Cooper set numerous program weight room high marks this winter, and is in the best shape he has been in throughout his career. We then have a trio of Sophomore OL that have crushed weight room programming, as well as spent the spring/summer attending college football camps. These three are Lucas Gunn (So., C), Bently Byar (So., OG), and Jarrett Lewis (So., OT). An additional Sophomore OL that has come on strong this offseason is Hunter Jones, who will split his time between Guard and Defensive Tackle. Rounding out our improving OL are Seniors Rhett Burkman and Gomie Gomez, who will work to solidify the OT spot.
Question 3
Defensively, who are your primary stoppers and which young players have earned their shot at playing time due to offseason performance?
Response:
Our defense looks to be led by 9 Senior Starters this fall. Leading the charge inside is Senior Defensive Lineman Gomie Gomez, a 2025 IFCA 4A Allstate selection. Returning after missing his Junior Campaign due to injury is Braxton Walton, who will play OLB. Also at LB, Senior Jace Cole returns in his 3rd year starting. In the secondary, seniors Khycen Sutton and Keegan Wheeler look to lock down at Corner, while Junior Saban Messer looks to be the shell signal caller at Free Safety.
Question 4
What is your summer competition and camp schedule as you prepare this football team for August camp?
Response:
Once we wrap up the moratorium periods, we return to work 4 days per week in July. We host an internal team camp week and utilize many of our padded practice allotment for the summer. We have 2 scrimmages in July; one 3 team scrimmage with Franklin Community (where I coached before JC) and Shelbyville. We also will travel to Clarksville for a large 7v7 event in Southern Indiana.
The remaining summer weeks are focused on us. Continuing to improve on the field, in the weight room, and in our team building activities.
Question 5
What are the biggest challenges you and staff face as the clock ticks down with just 8 weeks remaining before its time to put the pads on?
Response:
The remaining challenges are similar to everyone else; finding ways to best maximize the pieces we have, finding ways to improve, and finding ways to get ready for week 1 @ Paoli.

Response:

Question 2:
How do you describe your style of play?
Response:
My style of play is honestly pretty simple. Play as hard as possible. Knowing that I left everything I had out on the field no matter the outcome.
Question 3:
What was the highlight of the 2025 season?
Response:
The highlight of my 2025 season was our come back week 5. It was our homecoming and it was awesome to see the support from our community. It was truly a surreal feeling. Making a come back that big in front of our home crowd against our rival was something you dream of.
Question 4:

This year we got the chance to travel to Eastern Pekin. I’ve never played a high school game in grass. That was probably my favorite field to play on.
Question 5:
Which road stadium is the toughest to play in?
Response:
The toughest road stadium I’d say was Columbus East my Sophomore year. On 3rd downs the blare music and try to make the atmosphere seem louder then what it is.
Question 6:
Best advice you have received about playing your position? Who gave it to you?
Response:
All of my coach’s are fantastic. They’d do anything for anybody on the team. The best mentor I’ve been able to be coached by is Coach Woolf. The best advice he’s given to me is make mistakes at 100%.

What is the best part of being a student athlete at your school?
Response :
The best part of being a student athlete are the friends you make along the way. It’s a great way to meet new people.

Favorite part of practice?
Response:
My favorite part of practice is inside run. Having the pressure to make the perfect block for my run back is my favorite.
Question 9:
Has the transfer portal made recruiting tougher for high school players?
Response:
The transfer portal has definitely made it somewhat harder for athletes in all sports. Football in particular coach’s prioritize stronger, faster, and players who have proved themselves. With the ability for coaches to find players who have the experience high schoolers don’t, it challenges high schoolers to find college options.
Question 10:
Favorite sports movie or show?
Response:
My favorite sports movie is Remember the Titans. The movie just really shows how a simple game can bring so many people together.
Question 11:
If you could sit down with any athlete for an hour, who would it be?
Response:
If I could sit down with any player I’d pick Quentin Nelson.
11 years ago, watching my Uncle Ian & Trever Gunn play for @TMU_Football sparked my love for football. Today, I got to attend his alumni prospect camp. Blessed to carry on the family legacy. @CoachNorwell@CoachElfers@JCPanthersfball
