Nurse Stripped Of Her License After Stealing $1 Million From Her 99-Yr-Old Patient And Spending It On Cosmetic Surgery
A nurse, Rebecca Louise Burwood, has been struck off the nursing register after exploiting a vulnerable 99-year-old woman and using her money for personal gain, including cosmetic surgery and home improvements.
Burwood, who was deputy manager at Bryn Yr Haul Care Home in Mold, Flintshire, abused her position of trust between 2017 and 2023. She became the woman’s lasting power of attorney while overseeing her care, withdrew money from her accounts and obtained ownership of her £400,000 house.
A Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) tribunal heard that more than £370,000 left the woman’s bank account over five years, including £160,000 withdrawn from ATMs. Burwood also used funds for home improvements, bills and vehicles, persuading the elderly woman to pay £20,000 for a car and £9,000 for a campervan, supposedly for their outings.
Burwood claimed the woman had requested cash withdrawals to donate to charities. However, bank staff described her behaviour as “almost blackmailing” the pensioner when she attempted to have restrictions on the woman’s account lifted. The panel heard that Burwood warned she would no longer take the woman on outings if she could not access her money.
Another nurse reportedly overheard Burwood saying, “I will give you the money back” and “sign here,” raising concerns about financial abuse.
The tribunal described her actions as a “sustained, calculated course of conduct,” accusing her of manipulating the woman and having “weaponised” the trust placed in her.
Although Burwood said she “deeply regretted her actions” and “saw the resident as her nanna,” the panel ruled that her conduct was dishonest, morally reprehensible and far below the standards expected of a registered nurse. It consequently ordered her removal from the nursing register.
The victim has since d+ed, reportedly leaving enough money to cover only 23 months of care before the local council would have needed to intervene.
