MOTHERS AND “THE PATRONAS”
A group of women from central Mexico has been supporting migrant children for years—children who pass through their borders and are often pushed back by the U.S. system. Las Patronas help thousands of people along the shared border between Mexico and the United States. Although they rarely receive much attention, Las Patronas are a women’s collective that goes every day to the railway tracks used by the train known as La Bestia to deliver food to migrants riding on top of it. The group distributes aid packages twice a day.
Children who make this journey are far more vulnerable than adults. Death and mutilation under La Bestia pose a severe risk, along with extortion and murder by criminal gangs and corrupt Mexican officials. For migrant women, rape and abuse are constant threats.
Today, they distribute around 30 kilograms of food daily—bread, rice, and beans that they cook themselves. With these rations, they are able to feed an estimated 800 people per day. In 2025, they celebrated their 30th anniversary.
