Nothing exposes human selfishness like money that must be returned.

The moment someone is in distress, they approach you with humility, urgency, sometimes even desperation. They appeal to your empathy. But the moment the money lands in their account, the power dynamic shifts.

Your urgency is no longer their urgency. Your sacrifice is no longer visible to them. Their life continues unencumbered , while you are left holding the expectation of repayment. And from that point forward, the debt is serviced ( if at all) on their own terms, according to their own comfort, their own timing and their convenience.

My friends, this is your annual reminder… and a 2 part warning.

1. It’s time to get those toes ready for plakkies. Last year I posted this and one person was VERY angry because they felt I was discriminating against people with ugly feet. I wasn’t. And I’m not. I promise. Your feet can look like a bag of NikNaks that’s gone through a blender, just make sure your nails are cut. Kapeesh.

2. Today is going to be 31° (in Joburg). But summer is not here yet. We’re still in Winter. I know it doesn’t feel like it but it is. And there will be cold spells. A few of them. There might even be some snow. Remember last year? Remember???? So don’t pack away the winter jarmies yet.
