24 de septiembre de 1906, nace, en El Puerto de Santa María, Juan “Modesto” Guilloto. miembro del PCE, fue enviado a la Unión Soviética en los años 30 para recibir instrucción militar durante unos pocos meses. Al llegar, lideró las MAOC (Milicias Antifascistas Obreras y Campesinas), que se adiestraban los fines de semana en la sierra de Madrid con oficiales de la UMRA.

Inició la Guerra Civil en el 5° Regimiento, siendo el único oficial de la Escala de Milicias que llegó a alcanzar al generalato. Mandó unidades en el Ejército de Maniobra en casi todas las batallas trascendentales de la contienda. Llegó a liderar el Ejército del Ebro, compuesto por más de 80000 efectivos en 1938.

Al acabar la guerra fue a la URSS, donde volvió a recibir formación militar y llegó a ser general del Ejército checo durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial.

Durante la invasión de Checoslovaquia que se produjo tras la Primavera de Praga, Modesto salió a la calle a enfrentarse a los carros soviéticos.

Su añoranza por poder volver a España algún día se vio truncada con su fallecimiento en 1969.
