#OTD in 1828, Daniel O’Connell won the Clare by-election.

This victory added a new momentum to his work toward Catholic Emancipation. Introduced the following year, this enabled O’Connell to take his seat in parliament and carry on his work from parliament.

#OTD in 1867, Young Irelander Thomas Francis Meagher died.

Leading a colourful life, Meagher opposed Daniel O’Connell’s pacifist approach towards Irish freedom, raised the first Irish tricolour, took part in the American Civil War and became Governor of Montana.

Today in 1868, revolutionary socialist James Connolly was born. Connolly was a staunch supporter of the Suffrage and Feminist movement, founded the Irish Citizen Army for men and women, was one of the 7 signatories of the proclamation and led the GPO garrison during 1916.

This week, June 1903, marks the wedding anniversary of the remarkable and revolutionary Sheehy-Skeffingtons. The two chose to wear graduation gowns instead of traditional outfits and combined their surnames into Sheehy-Skeffington to honour each other.
