Sports in Kansas All-Classes & 5A Boys Coach of the Year: Steve Eck of Kapaun.
After graduating a Top 5 player last season and starting the season 5-3, not many were giving Kapaun a shot to repeat or even be a contender in 5A. However, coach Eck and the Crusaders had other plans. Kapaun repeated as 5A champs led by SIK all classes Top 5 selection in sharp shooting senior Corbin Johnson. KMC defeated undefeated Highland Park 58-55 in overtime to finish the season 22-3 and state champions. Kapaun won their last 17 games of the season. Eck, a Kansas coaching legend, has eight state titles as a high schoool coach in Kansas. Six of those coming at Wichita South where he was 227-15 in the 1980s and 1990s. He would then win two national titles in juco where he coached and won over 640 games. In 45 years as a head high school and college coach, Eck is 1,066-173. 315-25 at the high school level. Incredible. Eck is an alum of Haven HS and Newman University. He lists his mother, Neil Hayes and Dick Schumacher as having the biggest impact on his coaching career. “Injuries early on and started 5-3. Then won 17 straight and avenged all 3 losses. Probably one of my closest teams and probably one of my best defensive teams. Everyone shared the ball.” Eck told Chet Kuplen of Sports in Kansas earlier this week. #sportsinkansas Eck was also last years 5A coach of the year from Sports in Kansas.

Hornets are the three seed. Lebo is sixth seed with a 13-9 record. #sportsinkansas
