You don’t become seventh on the list of Manchester United’s all-time appearance makers – behind only Giggs, Scholes, G Nev, Rooney, De Gea and Keane – win five titles for one of the most demanding managers in history, overcome a bout of depression, take and nail a penalty in a Champions League final without having strength of character. You don’t captain United for a season unless you have leadership qualities.

Leadership comes in differing forms. Carrick is a quiet leader, who will have his say behind closed doors, for the players, not for the cameras. Not for show. Carrick has a big job on at Manchester United but don’t doubt his determination to get it right. Because he cares about the Club, the staff, the players and the fans. Good luck to him. #MUFC
