@joshwlkr Only when the tea is brewed (as it should be) in a pot, yes? I really hope you’re not telling me you make tea brewed in the cup even worse by putting the milk in first. That would be very dispiriting.
@LawrenceTricia Yeah, lots of different aspects to this, eh? Definitely recommend Benanav’s book and especially the chapter on UBI (titled ‘Silver Bullets?’).
@LawrenceTricia My phrasing was probably ambiguous, but Benanav is critiquing the case for UBI here, rather than advocating for it. He makes a compelling case for why it won’t be a stepping stone to something better (which is largely how I’ve become accustomed to think of it).
What I particularly admire about this short book is that it not only offers a cogent critique of automation theory and the case for UBI (which would be useful enough in itself) but also offers its own positive contribution to the project of envisioning post-scarcity futures.
If you’ve invested the time to read The Ministry for the Future, do yourself a favour and invest a bit more time in this podcast about the book. The book itself is amazing and these folks are helping me enjoy and appreciate it even more.
Our penultimate episode on THE MINISTRY FOR THE FUTURE by Kim Stanley Robinson has just been posted! What better time to do some stocktaking that hopefully avoids melancholia? #scifi https://t.co/01HtIXWyhH

Kiwis - step outside and look to the west. If you have a clear view of the horizon you will see a crescent moon🌙 , and below it two “stars”, the planets Jupiter and Saturn🪐 - over the next few days they will edge closer in the sky; a cosmic treat at the end of the hardest year.
@juliefairey Makes sense but I don’t know why they would close all other doors with 2 mins still showing on the board, esp on a short 3 carriage train. I think they used to do that then changed it to 30 secs a while back. But this evening I was galloping down the platform with 2 mins to go 🤷🏻♂️
Why do the AKL trains close all the doors except one at the end 2 minutes from departure? What possible safety benefit accrues from having a bunch of people sprinting down the platform to catch a train they are on time for?
