No1 reason to start a company because even by taking the ‘safe’ route the odds are against you anyway.
You might as well choose a game you think you can win and then bet big.
If you win, you probably win far bigger than the safe path.
Get in the arena and play the right game for you.
You're 21. You just graduated top of your class from an elite university, ten years of grinding at school behind you. Top 0.1%. Now you need a job.
You're ambitious but not reckless. You'd like what your boomer parents had by the end of their twenties: a decent family home, in a part of town with schools you'd want to send your kids to, room to start a family. Modest, by the standards they bought it at.
Here's the economics. In London, where the best jobs are, that house is north of two million. That's a 500k deposit, before you've paid a penny of school fees or thought about actually living.
So how does a 28-year-old get to half a million in liquid savings? Post tax. Realistically, very few doors: investment banking, trading, a magic circle law firm, maybe private equity. And even then you need to get though brutal admissions, be a top performer every year, be a bit lucky, and do 80 to 100 hour weeks for years, in a job that isn't really fulfilling.
The alternative is to do something the world needs more of, engineer, architect, doctor, teacher, and accept the family home is off the table, probably for good.
So unless you've got other means of support, that's the apparent trade-off. I was there myself, and chose to grind it out for eight years so I could buy my first home. At the time I felt I didn't have a choice. In hindsight I should have gone straight into building something of my own.
People worry about AI creating a permanent underclass. Look at the options a top graduate has today and we're sort of already there.
The system's broken, and people want something better.
Christos @chrstoCC, GM UK & Europe at @airwallex, says the company is adding 1,000 customers a month as its European business grows more than 100% year-on-year:
"We're adding like a thousand new customers a month."
"Our business in Europe is over 100% year-on-year."
"We've committed to further expand that with a billion dollar investment in the region."
"We've been filling that at like 10 new hires a week."
"We just see such a good talent pool here."
