Ali Al-Naimi helped shape global oil markets during one of the most volatile periods in modern energy history.

At the peak of the 2008 oil spike near $147 per barrel, tensions inside OPEC weren’t just about supply. Saudi Arabia pushed for stability, while others favored higher prices. Al-Naimi even suggested that countries like Iran had an incentive to keep prices elevated, as oil revenue plays a major role in funding national priorities.

It showed a deeper truth about energy markets: oil prices aren’t just driven by supply and demand. They’re shaped by politics, power, and competing national interests.

So the real question is simple: should oil prices be set by the market, or influenced by geopolitics?
