The Farmer Who Keeps Records
Yesterday I was talking to a group of farmers and I asked one farmer about how much they need last season one proudly told me, “This season I made about UGX 12 million from my coffee.” And honestly, I was happy for him. UGX 12 million is not small money especially when you know what it takes to keep a coffee farm alive through a difficult season.
Then I asked him a very simple question: “How much did you spend?”
He paused.
Not because he didn’t want to answer me. He simply didn’t know.
And this is something I have come to realise in agriculture. We have become very good at celebrating sales and very poor at understanding business. A farmer harvests 10 bags, sells them for UGX 12 million and immediately starts talking about buying another acre. But ask how much went into labour, spraying, weeding, fertiliser, transport, harvesting, processing, meals for workers, loan interest and all those little expenses that nobody remembers until they are added together… suddenly the UGX 12 million doesn’t look the same.
Sometimes I even ask myself are we actually making money or are we just moving money around?
And don’t get me wrong. I am not saying every farmer needs complicated accounting books or a laptop on the farm. Even a small notebook can change the way you see your business. Record what you spend. Record what you harvest. Record what you sell. At the end of the season sit down and ask yourself one uncomfortable question: “After everything, what did I actually make?”
Because there is a big difference between saying “I sold my coffee for UGX 20 million” and saying “My farm made UGX 20 million.”
The first is a sale.
The second is a business claim.
And if you don’t know your costs, you don’t yet know your profit.
Maybe before we keep telling young people to acquire more acres, we should also teach them how to make the acre they already have make sense.
Know your farm. Know your numbers. Secure your future.
For God and my country

Uganda grows about 80% Robusta. Dr lan Clarke farms 3,200 acres of it. His blunt line in Kampala yesterday: the problem is not the variety, it is that we pick unripe cherry and get away with it.
Which fix changes the cup fastest?
A. New varieties
B. Harvest discipline

Maybe we need to go back to reading books, writing physical notes, and sitting with our own thoughts. AI is powerful, but I think we’re starting to forget the real work: thinking, remembering, questioning, and understanding things for ourselves.
Get 50k on your Visa Card, get a taxi to drive you to Nsambya Marriot hotel. Ask the taxi driver to open for you as you get out of his car. Pay him and enter the hotel. Ask the reception if they have seen three whire men looking for you. They will say no off course. Ask for restaurant area. Take a soda and open your laptop. As you drink keep lookijg at your watch as ir you have no time.
Do not finish the whole soda. Ask for the bill and swipe away to pay then call the taxi back and make sure he opens for you as you take the ride away.
Before you leave kindly ask the people at the front office desk that when yours guests come they should tell them you had to leavw for your next meeting. Off course these are phantom guests.
These are things we did. Fake it until you make it in life.
What the sun has done to coffee in Masaka this year is terrible. In some gardens, all leaves have literally dried. It rained about four weeks ago, and the coffee flowered. But the sun that followed wasted all the flowers. Considering that many people are reliant on coffee and very few irrigate, tough times ahead! Agricultural efforts need to be put on irrigation now. Living at the mercy of nature is very unsustainable.
During his session, CPA Robert Katuntu, CFA, Chief Investment Officer, Alpha Asset Managers Limited, challenged participants to rethink wealth, not simply as a collection of assets, but as a system that must be intentionally built, governed, protected and passed on.
Takeaways:
➖A good investment should be assessed by its net real return, risk-adjusted return, liquidity, portfolio fit, structure and governance, as well as its suitability and outlook.
➖The presentation outlined seven essential controls: Purpose & Goals, Cash Flow, Protection, Investment, Compliance, Retirement, and Estate planning. Together, these controls create a framework for wealth that can withstand shocks and remain useful across generations.
➖From overconfidence and confirmation bias to loss aversion, fear, envy, regret and inertia, behavioural biases can significantly influence investment decisions.
➖Diversification is more than owning several assets True diversification means holding assets that respond differently to the same shock.
➖Before committing capital, investors should ask: Who regulates the provider? Whose name is on the asset? What are the risks? How liquid is the investment? Is performance independently evidenced? Are there conflicts of interest? Can the records be retrieved?
➖A retirement plan should quantify the desired lifestyle, future income needs, capital gap, contribution rate and potential risks—including longevity, health costs and weaker-than-expected returns.
➖Wealth should not depend entirely on one person.

Prof. Engineer Bainomugisha, College of Computing and Information Sciences, Makerere University, unpacked what Artificial Intelligence means for professionals, institutions and the future of work at the 31st ICPAU Annual Seminar.
Here are some of the key points from his session:
-Generative AI has changed the conversation, tools can now generate text, images, videos and more, making AI accessible to a much wider audience.
-We need AI creators and universities must continue developing the technical talent capable of building and advancing AI technologies.
-We also need AI users and professionals across accountancy, banking, business and other fields need the skills to use AI effectively in their work.
-You do not have to be a technical expert or AI developer. Understanding the basics and knowing how to apply AI effectively is increasingly important.
-Technology alone does not create transformation, institutions need people with the right skills to turn technology into meaningful results.
