A home is not a token

Today I got tear-gassed for the first time in my life.

I was at the housing protest in Spain, calm, along with thousands of other people. I didn't do anything but raise my voice. It hit me because I was standing there.

Article 47 of the Spanish Constitution says everyone has the right to decent housing. What almost nobody quotes is the next line: public authorities must regulate land use "to prevent speculation." That's been written down since 1978, and we've spent almost fifty years doing exactly the opposite.

All this has had me thinking. I've been in crypto since 2021, I build a small community on Algorand, and I really believe in transparent processes. I thought of @lofty_ai: you buy a small piece of a home for 50 dollars and every day you get your share of the rent. They sell it as democratizing real estate investment, and they have a point. Well, behind every token there's someone paying that rent, and as an investor you want it to go up. That person wants it to go down. However transparent the system is, you're on opposite sides.

In Spain we've already seen this on a big scale. After the 2008 crisis, vulture funds bought thousands of homes from banks and even from public administrations. In 2013 Madrid sold almost 1,900 public housing units to a Blackstone subsidiary. Social housing turned into an investment portfolio. Then came the rent increases and the families who couldn't renew their leases. It's only gotten worse, to the point that locals like me have to leave our cities because we can't afford rent, much less buy a home, with so much of it in the hands of investors and short-term rentals.

According to the latest census, Spain has around 3.8 million empty homes. I know they don't all belong to funds. Many are in villages that are losing their population, or are inherited houses nobody does anything with. But in the cities there are many flats kept empty, waiting for prices to rise, because if you have the financial muscle it pays more to wait than to rent. Less supply, higher prices. Meanwhile, in 2025 alone there were more than 25,000 evictions, according to Spain's judicial council. About seventy families every single day.

So I'll say it plainly: I believe basic goods, the ones the law recognizes as rights, shouldn't be a product to speculate with.

Owning a flat and renting it out at a fair price is one thing. Buying hundreds of homes to squeeze them, or keeping them locked until the market is where you want it, is very different. Nobody would think it's normal for a fund to hoard a city's bread to push the price up. Maybe we do need to build more. Fine, let's build. But homes to live in.

I encourage you to think who's on the other side before speculating with housing.

A home is for living in.
