Just when we thought our final drive at Amrit Vav was over, the stepwell surprised us once again.

Three more endangered turtles were found today, one of them the largest, and likely the oldest, individual we’ve encountered here, along with two smaller ones. That brings the total number recorded at the site to 5.

A fitting reminder that Amrit Vav still has many stories to tell.

After decades of darkness beneath this 7-storey ancient vav, something extraordinary has finally emerged.

While pumping water out through the night, our team discovered a centuries old carved deity idol submerged deep inside the stepwell.

This may be the biggest discovery from the vav so far.

Hari and Lakshman have now been handed over to the Forest Department. After a 14 day quarantine period, both will finally be released into lakes where they can live freely in their natural ecosystem.

We had hoped to bring them back to the vav once the restoration was complete, but this was the right decision for them.

After surviving for years trapped inside a garbage-filled stepwell, both proved to be true fighters. Now, they finally have a chance at the life they deserved.

Just now, we have found another turtle from the Stepwell. This one is bigger and older, bringing the total number of these endangered species found here to 2.

Both turtles are currently safe within the premises, being properly cared for and fed.

Tomorrow morning, doctors along with officials from the Forest Department will inspect and assess their condition.
