i really, really love the way xavier's story handles his immortality / long lifespan

he has, of course, gone through the typical motions of not staying in one “life” for too long, faking his death, and floating through people's lives as a temporary yet impactful presence

but not with everyone. he has a number of acquaintances who are in their 40s, 50s, or even older (like ulysses, preston, the B&B owner, and the bookstore owner), and he isn't hiding his identity from them

even arthur from the special task force; while xavier faked his death at the time, he does nothing to stop the now-elderly cop from recognizing him for one final reunion before his memories leave him for good

xavier's immortality isn't some huge secret that has to be protected at all costs. it's frequently used as a way to show how much other people trust and respect him. they willingly protect his secret for him

decades later, these people still consider xavier a friend, and treat him no differently despite the fact that he looks eternally in his twenties

there's also the aspect of what immortality means to the people of philos, and what it's robbed them of

after living for so long, most philosians can't truly appreciate the beauty of love and life. they don't appreciate the little joys. it's because their lives aren't fleeting that these things don't matter to them — even a spectacular once-in-a-century meteor shower means nothing because they can simply catch the next one

from the lucky loop: “you possess time, but you've lost your reverence for life.”

but then we have xavier.

xavier, who spends his centuries on earth appreciating every single thing life has to offer: the changing of seasons, the birds that visit his apartment, the ruins that grow into seas of flowers, the way the stars look from outside of the city, the importance of sharing a meal with the people you love

something we make note of during this birthday is that he has been alive for so long that things should either fall into one of two categories: already learned, or not interesting

but xavier is still learning. and still curious and enthusiastic about it

he learned how to play the claw machine. he learned how to improve his cooking skills. he learned how to ride a skateboard

and most important of all, in his own words: “how to love, and how to be loved”
