What a 2023 study published in Cognition and Emotion added is that the drive isn't just about seeing. Researchers in Italy and Finland found that people report significantly higher arousal when they believe what they're looking at is real. Not performed, not generated, not staged. Perceived authenticity directly increases self-reported arousal, independent of what the content actually shows.
Most people with this interest couldn't tell you what it's called. They just know that something performed leaves them cold, and something genuine doesn't. That gap between a reaction that was curated and one that actually happened is where the arousal lives.
It's also why subscription platforms have quietly become the right home for this. The ongoing relationship creates conditions that production content never can. There's no audition, no direction, no reason to perform. What a subscriber gets isn't a show. It's access.
People have told me directly: they're not looking for a show. They want to know it's actually happening.
I find that one of the more honest things anyone has said to me in this space.
