Saudi-backed government forces say they made a fast advance on Monday to retake the coast around the Bab el-Mandeb Strait up to Mocha, pushing the Iran-backed Houthis out of most of the ground they seized last month. The Houthis deny it. The same day, Turkey and Pakistan announced a "rapid deployment" of troops to Saudi Arabia under the Mecca Joint Defense Agreement, a mutual-defense pact the three countries signed on August 7, 2026, under which an attack on one counts as an attack on all. Turkey is now committed by treaty, has forces heading to the kingdom, and is the pact's main supplier of drones and air defense, but for now it is a backstop for Saudi territory rather than a combatant in Yemen. As this trial goes forward, it becomes the story of both parties. And whether they listen to each other or not, in the end the house is empty: no guests, no dishes left to wash.

In June 2022, the Virginia jury found that Heard had defamed Depp on all three statements he sued over. They awarded him $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages. Virginia caps punitive damages at $350,000, so his total came to about $10.35 million. Heard won one of her counterclaims. The jury found that one of Depp's lawyers, Adam Waldman, had defamed her when he called her abuse claims a hoax, and awarded her $2 million. Both sides appealed. In December 2022 they settled: Heard agreed to pay Depp $1 million, reportedly covered by her insurers, and both dropped their appeals. Depp said he would donate the money to charity.

It also went the other way in Britain. In 2020, Depp lost his libel case against The Sun, which had called him a "wife beater.*" The UK judge found most of Heard's abuse allegations substantially true.

So the "winner" depends on the courtroom, and this became a paper chase. *In fair play, The Sun should retract that label, given the US verdict.
