UK trade data for 2025 published yesterday. We now have 10 years of data since the EU ref & 5 since we left the customs union.

Remember the OBR forecast Brexit would reduce UK trade by 15% (hence their forecast of a 4% hit to productivity).

Keir Starmer says he wants to pursue 'even closer alignment with the single market'. He suggests that doing so is in the UK's national interest

But he says he doesn't want to join a customs union with the EU because it would undermine deals with the US and India

He tells @bbclaurak: 'What I mean by that if you look at the deal we have already done with the EU on food and agriculture we are aligning our rules so we can access the single market

'There are other areas where we should consider if it's in our interest to do the same and align with the single market. We take a sovereign decision whether we align or not. I think it's in our national interest to go further

'What I would say about the customs union is that I argued for a customs union for many years with the EU. I do understand why people are saying wouldn't it be better to go to a customs union

'I actually think now we've done deals with the US which are in our national interest, now we have done deals with India which are in our national interest, we are better looking to the single market rather than the customs union for our further alignment'

WARNING: Have you started to notice "pay by bank app" options at online check-outs. If so it's quicker, it's easier but be aware there's LITTLE PROTECTION.

It's on the likes of Just Eat and Ryanair. You don't give card details, just pick your bank, and log into the app (via biometrics) then its done.

Yet ultimately its just a bank transfer, which means you don't get the same refund rights like chargeback or Section 75 if things go wrong that you do when you pay by card. So for small things its no biggie, but beware with big important transactions.
