The United States has slammed the Albanese government’s plan to impose a broad digital “duty of care” that would dictate how platforms manage content and users’ feeds.

Washington wants answers: how would the government or the Communications Minister define “harm” and “risk,” who would set those definitions?

If Australia forces platforms to aggressively filter algorithmic feeds to satisfy a government mandate, the effect is not safety. It is censorship.

This should surprise no one. That kind of speech control was always going to alarm a country that still treats free expression as a core right.
