It was a Tuesday afternoon in Calabar when the panic set in. I was sitting at a local buka, halfway through my plate of afang soup , when my younger sister, Immaculata, called from school. Her voice was laced with that specific kind of tension every elder sibling knows all too well.

"Bro, please tell me you haven't forgotten. The deadline for my final-year project clearance is 3:00 PM today, or I’m delayed till next semester."

My heart did a quick flip. I hadn't forgotten, I just hadn't realized how fast the day was moving. The fee was ₦45,000.

"Don't worry, I'm sending it now," I said, trying to sound like a responsible big brother who had everything under control, lol.

I opened my usual banking app, typed in her account details, and hit send. Then came the dreaded loading wheel. It spun. And spun. Finally: Transaction Failed. Network Error.
I tried again and I was debited.

"Imma, check your account," I texted.
"Nothing yet, Big bro." Was the reply that I didn't want to hear.

Ten minutes passed. Then twenty. The money had left my account, but Immaculata was still standing outside the bursar’s office with zero naira in her balance and the clock ticking down to 3:00 PM. I called my bank's customer service, only to be greeted by an automated voice telling me my issue would be resolved in "24 to 48 hours."
Forty-eight hours? She had forty minutes! And being debited again without a successful transaction would mean both of us getting stranded because I wouldn't have enough again.

That moment had me panicking for real. It's because Money in Nigeria isn't just about how much you have; it’s how fast and reliably that money can be moved because over here life moves in double quick time, and money locked in transit during a crisis could cost you a valuable opportunity.

Standing outside that buka in Mayne Avenue, sweat starting to bead on my forehead, a friend that was with me noticed I was going through something serious and asked;
