Here you can see male orchid bees being attracted by the scent of eucalyptus oil - the males collect scents to make themselves more attractive to females! Some smell like flowers and others like blue cheese, there's someone out there for everyone I guess 🐝

Year two of the bee hotel and we have another sparkly guest: a cuckoo wasp (Chrysididae), which parasitise whichever larvae were already in there.

Although I'm not sure if she's emerging from last year or laying her own eggs...

@sfbaybees @bexagin @RosemaryMosco @EcologyToby As above, males display themselves and their scents, we can somewhat infer it's for reproductive purposes since each species has its own specific scent. It doesn't seem territorial since they display close to others. Analogous to birdsong perhaps? https://t.co/bzraovacGi

How incredible is this beetle? The 'springtail stalker' (#Notiophilus sp.) - absolutely tiny but the macro lens revealed its huge eyes and a beautiful metallic sheen. Adorable to you and me but probably the worst nightmare for a springtail! #entomology #beetles

@Chapman_Histo Speculation for this one would be: striae for elytra strength, but not so much needed since they're ground-dwelling and dont need to put up with the risks of sustained flight. Plus some extra shine in the middle as an anti-predation tactic since we think metallic/shine deters🐦

@Chapman_Histo I wonder too! From what I've read about striae in general it seems to be either to strengthen the elytra (like corrugation does to metal) or change the appearance for camouflage etc.
