This used to be the store and station everybody between here and the state line knew. Now there’s a for-sale sign and weeds coming up through the concrete.

Rural Mississippi school forgotten by time.

Hushpuckena ~ A decade ago, a whim led me off U.S. Route 61 in Bolivar County onto a side road, where I stumbled upon Hushpuckena, a forgotten Delta hamlet named for abundant sunflowers in Choctaw. Its abandoned businesses, overtaken by vines and cracked pavement, whispered of a vibrant past. A rusted safe sat in the weeds, and the old R.C. Tibbs & Sons store still had its weathered doors. Today, the safe and doors are gone, the roof collapsed, and the brickwork crumbles, with sagging shelves in a nearby building surrendering to time. https://t.co/SAkHPf9sp5 - This school sits alone in an open field, still resting on its original concrete foundation. Most of the roofs have caved in, leaving heaps of broken timber, twisted metal, and open sky above what used to be classrooms and hallways. Moving through the building was slow and careful work—downed beams, soft spots in the flooring, and thick vines and brush force you to pick your path.
