Yesterday we visited Bridgend College (Pencoed Campus) to speak to the environmental students about the wildlife importance of colliery spoil sites, which was followed by a field trip to the nearby Llanilid Opencast. Thanks to Lyn Evans (Lecturer) for the opportunity.
Some will undoubtedly misinterpret our views here to mean that public safety isn't important (it is!) BUT it's also important that any proposed works to coal tips is done as sensitively as possible to ensure that threatened species/habitats are not lost during a nature crisis
Today our level 3 Wildlife and Countryside students completed a footbridge they've been working on for several sessions. I'm so impressed with the quality of their work, such a talented and hard working group of people.
This was such a fun and rewarding event that it was such a privilege to be a part of. From water vole surveys to cooking on the campfire there was never a dull moment. Massive thank you to @CefnGarthenor, @INCCymru and @BridgendCollege Conservation Volunteers.
An amazing weekend study trip @CefnGarthenor with @BridgendCollege Countryside Management students and volunteers. Lots of wildlife, lots of survey work and lots of campfire cooking. Huge thanks to Alistair, @LynEvans2 and all the volunteers for making it such a success.
Had the absolute pleasure of listening to @LynEvans2 talk about environmental conservationism today while filming some material for our pedagogic peer learning scheme. Utterly blown away by the knowledge of our teaching staff and learned a thing or two about native reptiles too
@BridgendCollege Conservation Volunteers working today with @savebutterflies to clear scrub for the High Brown Fritillary. Great to have both old and new students out enjoying the weather and the bonfire!
Lovely to be part of #AutumnWatch last night to showcase the marsh fritillary project. A huge thanks to all the @BBCSpringwatch team. Thanks also to volunteers, farmers, landowners and funders for all the support. Thank you. Here are some of our most memorable moments so far...
Thanks to @BridgendCollege conservation volunteers and local landowner for planting 1,000+ scabious plugs on Saturday to help restore a marshy grassland in Tonyrefail. Restoring habitat in the landscape is the best way to secure the future for marsh fritillary locally. Thank you.
@BridgendCollege Conservation Volunteers today teamed up with @INCCymru to restore marshy grassland at Caerlan Farm near Tonyrefail. We planted over 1400 Devil's Bit Scabious plugs, grown by @HBridgend from seed harvested less than 10 kilometres away. A very exciting project.
It's been an emotional weekend. Mixed with the joy of graduation is the thoughtfulness and kindness of our students. Together they raised money in memory of the legendary Jeff Roberts to dedicate a woodland to him with hundreds left to donate to nature conservation charities. ๐
@ElizaBeansss It's been an absolute pleasure, Eliza. You've put in so much hard work and it's wonderful to see what an enthusiastic young naturalist you've become.
The left that is sick of the government now seems to include Jamie Oliver, the Archbishop of Canterbury, the BBC's financial expert, most Conservative MPs, Match of the Day, taxi drivers, the banks and the King. We'll move on to animals next, and then to items of furniture.

Dear friends, colleagues and former students,
Thank you all for your messages following the very sad loss of Jeff Roberts, a much loved lecturer, friend and colleague. Whilst this is an extremely difficult time I feel so lucky to have worked alongside Jeff for almost ten years.
Jeff's family have informed us that the funeral will be on Friday 21st October at 10.30am in Margam Crematorium and afterwards at The Glyn Clydach, SA10 7AJ.
First volunteer session of the new academic year. We had to fell some dead ash that is near a footpath, so it was the perfect excuse to create another reptile hibernacula!
