THE "MAUSI MA" OF ICONIC LODI GARDENS OF DELHI.
This is a true story and it is being told by Retd Captain Anil Singru:
"In short, the story is this. It is currently the breeding season for the Indian Grey Hornbill at Delhi. There are quite a few active nest sites that have been identified in Lodhi Garden, where Grey Hornbill chicks are growing inside tree cavities and being cared for by their parents. Then, quite unexpectedly, another character entered the story.
A lone female Oriental Pied Hornbill, much larger than the Grey Hornbills and a species not normally found in Delhi, appeared on the scene.
Nobody knows where she came from. One popular theory is that she may have escaped from captivity at some point in the past. She has no known mate and no family of her own.
Yet, for reasons nobody fully understands, she has become intensely interested in the Grey Hornbill nests.
What followed is quite an unusual story.
The Pied Hornbill, now affectionately nicknamed "Mausi Ma" by many observers, has repeatedly been feeding the Grey Hornbill chicks. At the same time, she aggressively chases away the actual Grey Hornbill parents from the nest area.
Every morning a fascinating drama unfolds at the nests now earmarked for a WWF led study. The legitimate parents try to reach their chicks, while the much larger foster "Mausi Ma" attempts to dominate the nest area and feed them herself.
The plot thickens further because the food being offered by the Pied Hornbill often differs from the diet normally associated with Grey Hornbills. The Greys typically bring figs, berries, insects and other small food items. The Pied Hornbill has been recorded bringing eggs, snails and occasionally other animal prey.
Nobody knows whether this difference is important, incidental, beneficial or harmful.
And then there is an even bigger question.
What happens when the chicks finally leave the nest?
Will the Pied Hornbill continue behaving like a foster parent?
Will the Grey parents take over completely?
Will there be conflict?
Or will something entirely unexpected happen?
There is very little scientific literature to guide us here. A somewhat similar case reported from Punjab ended rather grimly, with the Pied Hornbill eventually preying upon Grey Hornbill chicks that it had previously helped feed.
Whether the Lodhi Garden story would follow that path or take a completely different turn is something keeping the birding community on edge.
That is precisely why so many birders, photographers, volunteers and researchers are flocking to the Lodhi Gardens this summer.

So, gulp, I'm taking over Village Square - diving deeper into the heart of India. I get so tired of rural India being cast negatively when it's where the most interesting and endearing Indians are, nevermind the best food, stunning views and heritage. https://t.co/PxA1E7Ohi2
