WHY DOES IT BOTHER YOU SO MUCH?

There comes a point where criticism stops looking like football analysis and starts looking like something much deeper.

For over a year, Shedeur Sanders has done what many of his critics demanded. He has stayed quiet. He hasn’t gone on media tours defending himself. He hasn’t traded insults on social media. He hasn’t been involved in scandals. By all accounts, he has been working, studying film, improving his craft, and competing for an opportunity with the Cleveland Browns.

Yet somehow, he remains a target.

Former NFL coach Rex Ryan recently took another shot at Sanders, suggesting that he needs to stop making everything about himself and become more of a franchise quarterback.

The question isn’t whether Ryan is allowed to criticize a player.

The real question is:

Why does it bother you so much?

Why does a young Black quarterback, who isn’t responding to you, who isn’t creating controversy, who is simply working, continue to occupy so much space in your mind?

That’s the story.

“When Confidence Is Seen Differently”

Sports has always celebrated confidence.

Tom Brady was called competitive.

Peyton Manning was called cerebral.

Brett Favre was fiery.

Joe Burrow is cool.

Aaron Rodgers is outspoken.

But history has often treated confident Black quarterbacks differently.

Too confident.

Too flashy.

Too cocky.

Too loud.

Too arrogant.

The standard has never always been applied equally.

That doesn’t mean every criticism of a Black athlete is racist. Football players of every background get criticized. Analysts have every right to evaluate performance.

But when criticism consistently extends beyond performance into personality, especially before a player has had the opportunity to establish himself, it is reasonable to ask whether different expectations are being applied.

“Greatness Makes People Uncomfortable”

There is something about unapologetic confidence that unsettles certain people.

Especially when it comes from someone they didn’t expect.

Shedeur grew up in the spotlight.
He wears confidence naturally.

He doesn’t apologize for believing in himself. As he shouldn’t even if it makes people uncomfortable.

Why Does His Confidence Threaten You?

Here’s what I find fascinating.

Sanders’ confidence doesn’t stop anyone else from succeeding.

His success doesn’t diminish another quarterback’s legacy.

It doesn’t erase Rex Ryan’s coaching career.

It doesn’t rewrite NFL history.

So why the repeated need to humble him?

Why the repeated commentary?

Why the obsession?

Sometimes what irritates us most in another person reveals something about ourselves.

“The Burden Black Leaders Often Carry”

Black athletes have frequently been expected to prove not only that they are talented, but that they are humble enough to deserve their talent.

History includes many examples where Black leaders, athletes, and public figures were encouraged to “tone it down,” “be grateful,” or “stay in their place.”

Those expectations have not always been placed equally on everyone.

That context doesn’t automatically explain every criticism of a Black athlete. But it is part of the broader conversation, and it’s fair to examine whether those historical patterns still influence how some people perceive confidence today.

Let The Young Man Enjoy himself

At some point…

Enough.

If Shedeur fails…

Football will expose it.

If he succeeds…

Football will prove it.

The game has always been the ultimate judge.

Until then…

Maybe let the young man work.

Let him compete.

Let him grow.

And if his confidence bothers you more than his performance…

Perhaps the better question isn’t about Shedeur.

To say he has to realize it’s more we than me is crazy when this man just hosted a free Youth Football Camp for kids.

Also, as a rookie, he showed up and hosted an event for all those people who were impacted by the Garden Valley fire - those are selfless acts.

Rex Ryan is 63 years old, he doesn’t understand the younger generation.. chill on passing judgment over nothing.

Shedeur Fact: He fulfilled his team obligations in Miami. And flights out were getting delayed left & right the next morning of his camp. HE SPENT HIS OWN MONEY to book a private jet to get him to Cleveland on time, & fulfill his obligation to the children of Cleveland! SELFLESS!
