Twenty-five years ago today, nearly 3,000 people were murdered in the attacks of September 11, including 24 Canadians.

We remember the lives that were stolen, the families forever changed, and the extraordinary courage of those who ran toward danger when everyone else was trying to escape.

Firefighters, police officers, paramedics and ordinary citizens put themselves in harm’s way to save strangers. Many never came home. Their example of service and sacrifice still speaks to us a quarter-century later.

Canada also answered the call that day. As American airspace closed, communities across our country welcomed diverted aircraft and thousands of stranded passengers. YVR took in flights here in British Columbia, while Canadians opened airports, hotels, community halls and their own homes to people suddenly far from where they were supposed to be.

In the days that followed, Canadian first responders travelled south to stand with grieving colleagues and families.

September 11 showed us humanity at its worst, but also courage, service and solidarity at their very best.

We remember the fallen. We honour those who answered the call. And we will never forget.

When every corner of B.C.’s forestry sector comes together to warn the Premier that the industry is in crisis, the government has run out of excuses.

Fifteen organizations representing forestry workers, businesses, contractors, manufacturers and communities have written an open letter to Premier David Eby calling for a Forestry Crisis Action Group. They’re calling on the government to stop piling on new taxes and fees, cut red tape, get more fibre to mills, and raise the annual harvest from roughly 29 million to 45 million cubic metres — a move that could bring in almost $600 million a year in additional government revenue.

“Just about everyone involved in the forestry industry is represented in this letter, and the government must listen to them,” said MLA Ward Stamer, Shadow Minister for Forestry, Environment, and Parks. “Action needs to be swift if we are going to save forestry. The NDP keeps pointing fingers at the U.S. Tariffs have made things harder, but the provincial government isn’t pulling the right levers to give this industry a lifeline. The cost of permitting and block layout has tripled in the past five years. Permitting and access to Crown fibre are decisions made right here in B.C. The government needs to stop making it harder for people to do their jobs.”

B.C. has already lost 21 mills since 2023, with roughly 15,000 forestry jobs gone since 2022. The NDP promised to raise the annual harvest to 45 million cubic metres. More than a year later, B.C. is still nowhere near that target.

“This is about real people losing good-paying jobs in communities that depend on forestry,” said MLA Linda Hepner, Shadow Minister for Labour. “Every time a mill closes, families feel it. Small businesses feel it. Entire communities feel it. The government needs to stop talking and start listening to the people who are working in this industry.”

MLA Gavin Dew, Shadow Minister for Finance, blasted Premier David Eby for choosing political theatrics over real solutions.

"David Eby needs to stop dressing up like an embarrassing cartoon lumberjack and start listening to people who actually work in forestry. The forestry sector is putting forward a practical solution to increase economic activity, stabilize the sector, and fill the fiscal hole left by the $1.5B gas royalty debacle. It’s time to stop the policy carousel, stop the self-imposed damage, and start working together to save jobs, save our economy, and shore up our fiscal position.”

“Forestry is part of the backbone of B.C.’s economy, and its decline should concern every British Columbian,” said Hon. Kerry-Lynne Findlay, Leader of the Conservative Party of B.C. “We cannot stand by while good jobs disappear, communities suffer and investment leaves the province. The government needs to recognize the seriousness of this moment and get B.C. back to work.”

Leading Aboriginal Law Expert in Canada Tom Isaac says it clear as day.

➡️The BC NDP is doing next to nothing to protect private property rights.
➡️UNDRIP does not belong in Canada, and is NOT international law. Weirdly, the NDP has made all BC laws mandatory to align with UNDRIP, and has it hard-wired in a new modern treaty model as “an authoritative source for the implementation” of them.
➡️The BC NDP plays favourites with the 204 FN in the province. Most don’t get a seat at any table.
➡️The BC NDP has no “Master Plan” for reconciliation and lacks any strategic thinking around these very important issues.

I Can’t Believe It.

Sometimes I think the NDP want the forestry industry in B.C. to just ride into the sunset permanently.

I mean if they didn’t, they’d be doing literally everything they could-EVERYTHING within their power to support forestry during these challenging times.

Instead?

A few land use plans here, a few million bucks for mills there…

Essentially Nothing.

There’s multiple fingers to point for the struggles the industry faces, but at the top of the list is the B.C. NDP.

Global News just reported on the performance bonuses the NDP government gave to senior executives and political staff.

I told them it is really out of touch and somewhat obtuse for a government running a deficit of this size, in an economy where people are struggling just to put food on the table, to provide performance bonuses.

Shannon Salter, the deputy minister to the Premier, received more than $434,000 in total compensation last year along with a performance based increase. Barbara Carmichael, the Deputy Attorney General, received more than $405,000 and a nearly 2 percent performance based increase.

These raises cost $23 million. They were awarded in the same year the province recorded a record $7.7 billion deficit while cutting housing programs and long term care.

The government says the increases are for good or superior performance and are needed to stay competitive with the private sector. The disclosure does not list a single specific target that was met.

I said on Global that there should be clear parameters set on services or budget measures so the public can see whether these officials are actually exceeding them. There are none.

MLAs froze their own raise. The people who oversaw the cuts and the deficit did not. This year’s deficit is projected at $13.3 billion and Finance still will not say whether these bonuses will be paid again.

@SFU is putting British Columbia on the world stage. During the Debate on Budget Estimates for the Ministry of Transportation and Transit, I asked what it will take to move the proposed Burnaby Mountain Gondola from years of planning and study into construction. SFU has earned its place on the world stage. It deserves transportation infrastructure to match.

The minister acknowledged the strong local support and called the gondola an “exciting-looking option.” That support now needs to be turned into action. I’m calling on @mikefarnworthbc to work with TransLink and the Mayors’ Council to get it into the investment plan and commit the province to its share of the funding.

The mayor of Santa Ana, California is out with police officers confronting the homeless. The homeless are offered services including treatment and shelter, if they refuse they go to jail

THIS is how it should be

“I'm the mayor of the city of Santa Ana. I'm out this morning with Santa Ana PD, with our QOLT team, our Quality of Life team, Teen Challenge, Salvation Army and what we're doing here today is we're working with those that are homeless on our streets.

We're offering them services, whether it's detox, a shelter, a program. And if they refuse all the services, then they end up going to jail. And why are we doing that again? We do this every single month. And why? Because Santa Ana deserves a good quality of life, just like all the other cities around us, and I always say that.

Because it's very important that you can walk the streets, drive around, and just raise your family here without seeing all the stuff that's going on around our city with the unhoused”
