I've been receiving a lot of the same message lately: "Hen, how can you condemn Trump's suggestion to send the Palestinians away?"
Many believe that, with the right explanation, they will change my mind, and I'll understand them. And I do understand why they think that, to an extent.
But I grew up on my grandmother's stories of Iraq, the beautiful community she lived in, the cafe she loved to visit. I felt I could touch this place I never visited, just from her words alone. And she told me how she lost it all to the Farhud. The trauma of that pogrom never left her, and as much as our family loves Israel, I know in my heart she never would have left Iraq this way.
Despite the horrible traumas she endured in Iraq, it was a part of her soul. To deny that, and to call for others to be displaced in the same way, would be to erase my own history.
My blood, my bones, my beating heart, every tear I've ever cried; they would not exist if my grandmother hadn't been rescued from the violence of ethnic cleansing and forced displacement. I was molded by its pain and memories of a place I will possibly never step foot in. I can never wish that on others.
So no, I will not support the forced removal of an entire people—whether “from the river to the sea” or anywhere else. I refuse to become what I fight against.
If some want to embrace Hamas’s vision for Jews but apply it to Arabs instead, that is their choice. It will never be mine.
I know who I am and what I stand for. It’s not too late to remind yourself too.
