Sometimes I sit and cry because I’m finally allowing myself to dress and express myself the way I’ve always wanted to. For so long, I listened to people tell me what wasn’t “for me.” I was told that, as a Black girl, bright colors weren’t my thing. That I should tone it down, be less colorful, less playful, less… me. I hope my younger self is proud because we’re finally doing the things we’ve always loved instead of the things other people expected from us.
Everybody looks good also because there’s one major factor: when you’re welcoming Black people to an event, you need to know how to light Black skin properly. The lighting, the brown backdrop, everything was designed to complement black skin.
IDOL EVENT RUNNERS! Please consider using sufficient, warm stage lighting for your darker-skinned performers. 🤎🖤 Too often I see Black and Brown performers looking washed out or barely visible because diverse skin tones weren't considered in the lighting setup. 😭😅
