3 hours into a local power cut, we’ve just been told to expect at least 4 more hours without mains. My ham radio kit is able to power the family’s tech, and make tea - first time my family’s appreciated the hobby?
Breaking news: @thersgb has released the Direct-to-Full syllabus. From January 2023, people can sit a single exam for a Full licence. The existing 3-tier system stays as-is. RSGB will allow Foundation and Intermediate to use the Direct-to-Full route if they wish. More to follow…
@M0Pwx @MX5AKA @theRSGB Here in Essex, club finder still shows two clubs that closed down a while back, and contact details for a silent key for another. When a club (or secretary) goes SK, entries don’t get updated. I alerted the regional team over a year ago, but still unfixed…
@MX5AKA @theRSGB Last July, I compiled a list of all of the errors across Region 12 and emailed the 9 page summary to the regional team and HQ. Many of those issues remain unfixed. Rather than getting a “thanks” for helping, I was moaned at for giving RSGB more work… lesson learnt!
@DrOrthogonal@onenewham@m0mux@theRSGB I’ve served on two traditional club committees, and have found myself equally frustrated. Being told “that would never work” by one of them spurred me to go independent, which was the best decision they’ve ever made! Many next-gen groups don’t have a committee, or such issues.
@G8CYK@m0mux@EssexHam Having served on 2 local club committees I quickly realised the problems that Andy's encountered on the society's board. New ideas & collaboration not welcome. Going independent was the best decision & I thank those clubs for proving that the grass was greener without a committee
@MX5AKA @theRSGB As you say, that's quite concerning, and is unlikely to inspire other keen and driven people to consider joining the society's leadership team. Hoping that may be a wake-up call
@m0mux Sorry to hear that Andy, and to hear of yet another passionate and active amateur feeling that they have no choice but to walk away. As you say, you tried your best. I'm sure with your drive and energy, you'll find new opportunities to push the hobby forward.
@G4ZUL@ecwarc Wow. 12 years is a long time. Well done on your hard work over the years. ECWARC has grown from strength to strength and is hugely well respected. Time for a rest after 12 years of committee meetings - an often thankless task!
Oooh - thanks to SEARS @gx4rse for reminding me that I’m delivering a talk tomorrow - My look behind the scenes of a broadcast radio studio. Details: https://t.co/7ejJjLJE7I
@_M0JJF The learning never stops in this hobby… one of the reasons I love it. Great that so many are now joining up too. Hopefully the old-hands will help train the newbies, unlike the armchair critic you bumped into!
Shocking example of intolerance in the hobby from an old-timer with no knowledge of the current exam structure and syllabus. Show some respect for your fellow hams, regardless of prefix.
@_M0JJF Sorry to hear that. The easiest way to counter this is to demonstrate that RAE is roughly equivalent to today’s Intermediate - there’s a side-by-side comparison here - https://t.co/oziJIyrTbA - send them a link and they’ll soon go quiet. Ignore them and have fun!
@Golf_5_TM @IpkLondonuk @EssexHam @rogcarder @theRSGB Of course - doubled their exam fee income, plus book sales and membership subs, but it was rolled out quickly & efficiently. Other projects take forever, get snarled in red tape, or seem to quietly get forgotten about.
@IpkLondonuk @EssexHam @rogcarder @theRSGB I’ve had my share of run-ins with them, and it can be frustrating. Often complicated by the mix of volunteers, secretive committees and musical chairs. That said, they pulled off a quick move to online exams during Covid, so they are capable of change now and again.
