I am a big fan of @ashleyshoo’s work. When I interviewed Ashley for my podcast a few years ago about cyborgs, she discussed technoableism. Her new book Against Technoableism: Rethinking Who Needs Improvement is available now for pre-order! https://t.co/KAJF49nnwc
So, I want to clear something up a few people last few weeks have been nicely saying you need to not be saying some of what your saying so directly Immy you are upsetting people, and if you want the chance to build what your building you need to keep them on side. Ok, so, I need to just address this. I am angry about co option and lack of citation for a number of our peers and us, not because of citation itself although if you care even a little about this work you will understand as white people especially white men who are co-opting why it’s even more critical, and if your generally a good person you’ll know how transformative a practice it is.
This is beyond that, I’ve seen cooption of peoples work, who for years have worked for nothing, invested themselves, all their savings, soul, physical energy in to it, not just in report and think piece writing of it, but on the ground and in every way to build and nurture radical community and practice. They get to a tiny stage of maybe having a salary and some good conditions for the peers, they’ve had to beg for it, prove and over prove themselves to funders and year on year try to find ways to keep it going and sit in the contradictions of if they don’t they’ll be criticised for poor pay, if they do they’ll be for taking big funding, and even then funders aren’t investing the millions needed so they stretching those bits between people and delivery. The work is transformative, the language and practice informing the field moving things on, hell you even fetishise the founders and have them doing talks everywhere to inspire, challenge, speak the truth to power, that you and mainstream won’t.
So, yeah, when you walk in after a big career, having earned and bought your house, and got your savings, and done everything, when you walk in co opt all that work and language and put in bids for millions and millions, for large salaries, double, treble, quadruple of those you co-opted the work from, to do desk based report writing and the European funders support it, uplift it, don’t challenge it, aren’t like erm hold on a second this looks very much like this actual practice over here, or this language over there, but without the long history or practice or even just the physical on the ground work of the acknowledgement of what all of that takes, I am going to now be angry, and speak on behalf of many of us and where I see it, because this is the same story that you when you put your black squares on Twitter, saying you would commit to not being, this is like 1000x that.
I want people to have good salaries, be paid well, transformative funding, but I’m sick of the cooption the scale of difference between how and who is doing this, and the blatant in ya face cooption, and yes until now I’ve not dogpiled anyone I don’t think thats right, but some of the lies and bad behaviour I’m seeing, some of this needs to just be called in quickly, because your going to destroy peoples souls who worked for so long to try prove itself to a system that wants to crush that spirit, practice, momentum.
To be able to work in place and practice as well as in theory is mega, every day your traversing relationships, neighbours, physical lifting, moving, doing, with desk based work, research, talks, sharing, writing, relationships at all scales, and global majority peeps are over scrutinised, your trying to run an org, learn and do all of that. No I don’t believe seeing all your work, and language be co-opted by privileged white men who raise millions of it, and earn treble what you do, without any accountability or citation or even the funders seeing what is happening is ok.
From my own perspective, I starting from the generous trust everyone share everything always, so it’s taken a lot over 10 years for me to be this cross about, and it’s not just us it’s lots of our peers work, and a lot of black, indigenous and women of colours work that it’s particularly happening too in plain sight.
