Voted Most unlikely ham radio user 2012 (clue in the callsign). Yaesu FT817 /p ops, ham fisted Linux doodling, cynicism, audiophile, mountain bikes, running.
@M0CNL Ha, used to have an Icom 706 mk1 widebanded to go on 11 meters with. Sold it for a Magnum S9. I flirted with unlocked ham radio kit a good 2 or 3 times but the attitude towards M3's annoyed me on the air, and online. Those people have died off now.
All my kit is all boxed up, and I'll have to get some new antennas and stuff up over on this place. As much as I can do, is probably access some repeaters via handheld radios for the time being.
I've also no idea what is or isn't running repeater wise in the North West.
@M0CNL My first proper ham radio was a Yaesu FT757 GX-II; sold my Magnum S9 as I was on 11 meters (wish I kept that for "museum piece reasons" *cough*). Sold it when I was made redundant, and bought a new FT897D and FT817ND.
@M0CNL Not sure, all I know is that I can see it and isn't terribly far away. Used to come over here (my missus' place) with a Yupiteru MVT7100 and used to pickup allsorts of Welsh analogue PMR stuff.
@M0CNL New QTH is pn a hill, can theoretically get deep into GW/MW land on simplex with a decent white stick on the chimney for definite. Can see Runcorn bridge and the Welsh hills from the top of the street on a good day.
I also need to get in touch with Offcom to change my address. But that's another story in itself and I'm clearly going to have to ring them up. Probably.
Anyway, 73 and best wishes for 2023 from M6GOF
How do I know they're into radio?
There's a Sirio 2012 on a bloody big freestanding pole quite literally three streets away. Would love to know what's plugged into the end of it.
I also need to see if there are any local radio clubs over here, and get friendly with a local radio op.
There's someone who visits an 11 meter op who's a radio amateur, they have a callsign sticker on their car and are M7***
I've been watching YouTube channels with much envy, and noticed we're getting into a solar peak again. Notably, stuff on 10 meters and 11 meters.
I see you're all working some spicy stuff out there, amateur radio or "pirate".
Greetings to all on 'Radio Twitter'. Apologies for the absence; been through a lot since the pandemic. Mum had a severe stroke, father passed away Oct '21 and...Well...Life got in the way of radio to be honest.
I've also moved too.
Looking a lot like a new VHF/UHF antenna may be needed. If it's moist outside for some reason by SWR goes mental. Which has also staved off my plan to get a Motorola DMR rig.
Best to get a new antenna and new coax first...
@ryan2390@mw0ian @G0WAT I remember reading PW and there was a guy in there that lived in the top storey of a block of flats. Made some sort of near invisible wire flung into the trees below. Amazing signal take off.
Worked him a couple of times too. Bonkers signal. Only had an FT817.
@mw0ian @DTL @g4dbn Used to commute to work via mountain bike for many years, nice when the conditions were ideal but not when it's winter and in the rain.
@WigglePig @nerdsville There's some horrific audio on HF, especially from the Italians. Sounds like they plumbed a Sadelta Echo Master Plus on full echo into a Yaesu FT 1000MP with a bandwidth as wide as a barn door.
Trying to work out what the antenna connector is on a Motorola DM4600 before I potentially buy one. Can't make it out.
Is it an S0239 or something weird? No apparent mention?
@RiaJairam A very 1980's looking Yaesu FT 757 GXII. Was a rather nice beginner radio, worked a load of American stations on 10 meters with it because I got my Foundation ticket during last sunspot peak.
Before I was licensed and played about with 11 meters, had an Icom 706 for a bit too.
