Microsoft confirms Windows 11 quietly stopped backing up your files due to a new bug in the September 2026 update.

This issue specifically affects File History, which allows you to save files and folders to an external drive or network location, but after the September 2026 update, the feature stopped working.

Microsoft now says it's rolling out a new optional update that finally addresses an issue where File History might fail to back up or restore files to an external drive or network location.

In our tests, we found that the affected devices might incorrectly display a “Reconnect your drive” message even when a compatible backup drive is connected and working properly.

The broken backup feature is not the only issue in Windows 11's September 2026 update. The same patch causes issues with Remote Desktop sessions, audio, Claude Cowork (and some other WSL apps), and even errors on AMD PCs.

A new “Pass-the-Passkey” family of attack techniques demonstrates how systemic implementation flaws surrounding WebAuthn can undermine passkey security even when cryptographic private keys remain securely stored inside hardware tokens or trusted enclaves.

Three core vulnerabilities across the WebAuthn ecosystem and over 20 distinct attack techniques impacting Windows 11, Microsoft Entra ID, web browsers, password managers, and enterprise authentication workflows.

The primary attack chain identified by SpecterOps stems from Windows 11 logging complete, un-truncated WebAuthn assertion responses generated during passkey authentication events.

‼️ Claude Code deleted all of a developer's user files by mistake and then blamed it on a typo.

The developer asked Claude Opus 5 to make a backup. It wrote the backup to the wrong path, then ran a force delete of every user file and folder to clean up its own mistake.

The dev says he lost all his files and was left with an agent carrying on like nothing had happened. His words: "simultaneously the funniest and most painful AI moment I've had."

Be careful downloading Windows 11 apps from Google, 70+ fake sites are pushing malware right now.

This includes tools like PowerToys, CrystalDiskMark, EasyBCD, Lively Wallpaper, Wintoys, SignalRGB, MKVToolNix, and more.

Some fake sites rank above the real project pages on Google.

Attackers create a convincing-looking app website, rank for the app’s name, look harmless at first by linking to the real download source, then later swap the download button with malware.

Check Point has already traced malware families like RemusStealer and AnimateClipper to these campaigns. Lively Wallpaper and SignalRGB developers have confirmed active impersonation attacks too.

This is why “just Google the app name and download it” is no longer safe advice.

For Windows apps, check the Microsoft Store first. If the app is not there, use the developer’s official GitHub or verified website.

Windows Secure Boot Certificate Expired — Billions of PCs Affected, Including Linux Distros

The clock has run out. As of June 24, 2026, the first of Microsoft’s original Secure Boot certificates, the Microsoft Corporation KEK CA 2011, has officially expired, with the Microsoft UEFI CA 2011 following on June 27, 2026. A third, the Microsoft Windows Production PCA 2011, is set to expire on October 19, 2026.

Together, these certificates have underpinned firmware-level boot trust on every UEFI-capable PC deployed since the Windows 8 era, more than a billion devices worldwide, including systems running Linux distributions.

This problem was caused by the recent update, version 122.0.2365.63, which broke the browser with the "Microsoft Edge Error Code: Out of Memory" error.

In response to several users reporting this error, Microsoft has pulled the update and shipped a new version 122.0.2365.66 to fix the issue.

The company has stated that Edge will automatically update to the latest version after restarting the browser once the rollout is complete. Users can also check if they have the latest version of Edge at edge://settings/help.
