#ICYMI Early Career Researchers went on an excursion to the University of Mauritius, Reduit Campus 🇲🇺 for academic and networking exchange. DS-I Africa ECR and University of Mauritius ECR presented their ongoing research. The participants were given a detailed tour of the Centre for Biomedical and Biomaterials Research (CBBR).

“We are grateful to our collaborators at the University of Mauritius for welcoming our Early Career Researchers at their science intensive institution. We all had a wonderful opportunity to learn about the important work that they are spearheading in nanotechnology. Our fellows experience in Mauritius was enriched by this visit” — Dr Rolanda Julius said.

Day 3 of the 4th DS-I Africa Consortium Meeting currently underway in Mauritius kicked off with a plenary session on ‘Innovative Tools and Solutions: Addressing Challenges in DS-I Africa- sharing and repurposing tools and resources’. Prof Bubacarr Bah gave a keynote presentation titled “Towards a White Box Machine Learning Model for Diabetic Retinopathy”.

Skyler presented on the work they do at IBM which is aimed at improving models and getting the models to ‘behave’. He said “The race going forward is not about bigger models, the race going forward is smaller, more specialised models.”

eLwazi ODSP is in Mauritius for the fourth @DSI_Africa consortium meeting. Over the weekend, we had two initiatives: the Data Bootcamp and the Large Language Models workshop 💻. Today marked the start of the meeting, with a lineup of great speakers on AI, ML, and Data Science.

During the refreshment break, our Early Career Researchers presented in the first poster session. The different topics included “Accelerating Big Data Harmonisation” and “Assessing the role of haematological traits on kidney function in Africans”

We are looking forward to the remaining poster presentations and the flash talk presentations both today and tomorrow respectively.

Day 1 of the 2024 REDCap Africa Symposium held at The Wanderers Club, Johannesburg has concluded. We had amazing talks from the speakers including DS-I Africa representation from @TinoMuzambi who spoke on Streamlining Data Collection for the DS-I Africa Coordinating Centre and Daniesha Govender from DDD-Africa who spoke on Implementing REDCap in the DDD-Africa Project: Advancing Genomic Medicine and Data Management in Resource-Constrained Settings.
