Our CEO @NabilaAguele helped bring the voices of girls, activists and local leaders into the rooms where global priorities get set at #unga81, and made sure girls' education was front and centre on the agenda for every country. 🙌
Five years. More than 200 edicts. Afghan women are still waiting for justice.
At the Goals Lounge during #UNGA81, @Malala, @GaisuY, @Metra_Mehran and @AsilaA were clear: what the Taliban have built is gender apartheid, and it must be named as a crime against humanity.
So far, 14 countries have endorsed codifying gender apartheid in the Crimes Against Humanity Treaty. We urge every government to join them.
Thank you to @IrishMissionUN and @UN_Partnerships for co-hosting.

@r_velascoa@Malala@MexOnu We are grateful for Mexico’s leadership in building the political support to end gender apartheid in Afghanistan and protect the rights of women and girls. 🙌
The Afghan girls who were in class when the Taliban banned their education are in their 20s now. No one has been held to account.
Teachers like these refused to abandon them. Most lost their own careers — dismissed from their schools, then shut out of nearly all jobs. Through secret schools and digital platforms, they continue teaching anyway, keeping connection and hope alive for girls.
Working with partners like @LEARNAfg, Malala Fund is funding alternative education for Afghan girls today while pushing to codify gender apartheid as a crime against humanity, so that no regime can strip girls of their rights without consequence, anywhere.
We cannot accept another five years without girls’ education.

In Tanzania, adolescent girls in Mpwapwa District, Dodoma, know how to recognise violence, report it safely and protect themselves and their peers.
Our partner @cdftz brought girls from two secondary schools together for a two-day programme on personal safety, emotional intelligence and rights. For these girls, understanding their rights has become a first step in feeling more confident to seek help when they need it and advocate for positive change in and outside their schools.
Investing in girls’ rights makes whole communities safer. 💫
Congratulations @kirstyjmcneill on your appointment at @FCDOGovUK — we're looking forward to seeing you at #UNGA81.
@GPforEducation's Multiply Possibility event comes at a critical moment. It's a chance for the #UK to show what real partnership with developing countries looks like: investing in education systems that reach every child and build fairer, more stable societies.
For girls, education is the foundation of everything else. It's how they claim their rights, how they stay safe from violence and abuse, and how they shape their own futures.

At our "Generation at stake" policy discussion, we brought together students, civil society, academia, government and parliamentarians to address the barriers keeping girls out of school in Pakistan — and to leave with commitments, not just conversation.
A generation of girls is waiting on decisions made in rooms like this one. 🇵🇰
In girls' voices, we find power and hope. Our partner @Acecharity makes sure decision-makers hear them.
Together with girls and local partners, we're making sure married girls and young mothers whose education was cut short get back in the classroom.

Before a girl can walk back through the school gates, she sometimes needs a space to find her footing first. 🌱
In Kano state, our partner Isa Wali Empowerment Initiative runs safe spaces — where married and unmarried girls become comfortable with learning before formally re-enrolling in school. Girls find friends, strengthen their reading and writing, and hear that they can be anything they dream of becoming.
Nigeria has national re-entry guidelines protecting married and pregnant girls’ right to return to school. Kano state has now adopted them, and they include support for flexible learning pathways like IWEI’s safe spaces.
Alongside our partners, we’re making sure re-entry policies reach the girls they were meant for.
Getting all girls in school in Pakistan requires both the policy expertise to make the case to decision-makers and the cultural reach to mobilise the public.
Last month, @MalalaFundPK and @faizfoundation announced a partnership to advance girls’ education — drawing on Malala Fund's advocacy experience and the civic influence, cultural credibility and literary legacy of Faiz Ahmed Faiz, one of Pakistan’s most celebrated poets.

"Change is possible."
Dr. Shakardokht Jafari, five years into Taliban rule, on what she learned from South African women who fought for decades and won.
"Just trying alone doesn't work."
Afghan women are acting. Countries must stand against the Taliban and help them codify gender apartheid as a crime against humanity.
Say it, share it, and make recognition of gender apartheid as a crime inevitable.

Apartheid in South Africa told women where they could go, where they could work, and with whom. Afghanistan’s laws do the same thing right now.

Every year on 15 August, Horia relives the day Kabul fell.
Five years of Taliban rule, and Afghan women like Horia have not stopped seeking justice.
This is Horia Mosadiq in Johannesburg, 70 years after South African women marched on Pretoria, carrying the same demand for equality: now demanding that gender apartheid be made a crime against humanity.

Today is a painful day. But it is also a hopeful one.
@Malala and @GaisuY, our Afghanistan Initiative lead, were in South Africa earlier this month, where jurists, lawyers, civil society activists and President Ramaphosa stood with Afghan women and girls.
South Africa knows what it means to dismantle a system of legalized oppression, and to rebuild after it. That history makes their solidarity especially meaningful and when a head of state calls out Taliban policy for what it is - a crime - it opens the door for its codification in international law. That is how change is made possible.
"Let's stay hopeful and fight to dismantle gender apartheid."
