New research shows a rising trend of family physicians in Ontario shifting from comprehensive care to focused practice, especially in emergency and hospitalist medicine.

From 1993 to 2022, the proportion in focused roles more than doubled, while the number of comprehensive family doctors per capita declined. These shifts raise important questions about access, equity, and how to sustain a balanced, effective health care system.
