This painting by Duncan Grant from 1918 shows the back bedroom window of 46 Gordon Square in London where he lived with fellow artist Vanessa Bell. The composition is made up of layered geometric shapes which shows Grant was familiar with cubism, then developing in France.
Painted in 1905, Pierre Bonnard's picture depicts the Avenue du Bois, at the end of which the Arc de Triomphe leads into the heart of Paris. He took pleasure in observing the streets in this part of the city, its busy life and that of the small parks that lined its streets.
Robert Borlase Smart was a frequent traveller, especially to Italy. From outside the Palazzo dei Camerlenghi in Venice, where this picture was painted, he could have chosen a view of the Ponte di Rialto but opted for the more modest Fondaco dei Tedeschi, next to it.
