Thanks to Commissioner General Demelash Gebremichael of the Ethiopian Police Force and his team, particularly the leadership, faculty and students at the Ethiopia Police University for a gracious welcome at the Ethiopian Police University in Sendafa, Ethiopia.
We toured the ultra-modern facilities of the Crime Investigation Academy of the University- undoubtedly one of the most advanced in our continent, if not the world, and discussed ways of leveraging the resources at the University (talent and technology) for our entire region.
IGAD Executive Secretary, Dr Workneh Gebeyehu, signed a Memorandum of Understanding to that effect with the Commissioner General Demelash Gebremichael of the Ethiopian Police Force, and we will offer tuition-free training (both short term and academic- up to PhD level) at the University for selected and qualified candidates from our member states.
At the conclusion, the Ethiopian Police Force honored Executive Secretary @DrWorkneh by establishing a scholarship program, in his name, at the Ethiopian Police University. This is not only a personal honor for a lifetime of exemplary public service, including more than ten years as Commissioner General of Police, but an honor to the entire IGAD family and the @IGADsecretariat.
As gesture of gratitude for the brotherly reception, and to support Ethiopia’s renowned #Green#Legacy, we planted trees at the academy.
Today in Sandafa, Ethiopia, IGAD Executive Secretary Dr Workneh Gebeyehu @DrWorkneh and Ethiopian Federal Police Commissioner General Demelash Gebremichael signed a Memorandum of Understanding between IGAD and the Ethiopian Police University.
This MoU will offer our regional law enforcement officers and agencies tuition-free access to advanced training in forensics, cyber-investigation, and counter-terrorism for police officers from IGAD Member States.
This will help in establishing a long lasting relationship between police forces in the region in the fight against transnational crimes. Glad to be part of this.
True regional security is not built on walls, but on the bridges of cooperation we construct between our institutions.
Today in Sandafa, I joined Commissioner General Demelash Gebremichael to sign an MoU between IGAD and the Ethiopian Police University. This partnership will offer our regional law enforcement officers and agencies tuition-free access to advanced training in forensics, cyber-investigation, and counter-terrorism.
By investing in our officers, we are building a unified defense force that ensures a safer, more resilient future for the entire Horn of Africa.

Glad to co-chair the IGAD Institutional Strengthening Action Programme (ISAP) Partners close-out meeting with HE Joachim Beijmo, Sweden Head of Regional Cooperation in Africa in Djibouti.
Attended by other partners, Ms Heikkilä Pirjo-Liisa, Deputy Head of Mission, Embassy of Finland, Ethiopia, Mr. Bloch Jean-Matthieu, Head of International Cooperation, Embassy of Switzerland, Ethiopia and Ms. Ruth Abraham, International Cooperation, Embassy of Sweden in Ethiopia, the meeting focused on our partnership under the ISAP Programme.
‘ISAP IV has been much more than a programme of institutional support. It has been an important catalyst for strengthening IGAD's governance, modernizing our management systems, improving accountability, advancing digital transformation, and fostering a stronger culture of results and performance. These reforms have enhanced the Secretariat's capacity to fulfil its mandate in an increasingly complex regional environment’.
