This day in 1944, "The Great Escape", a large escape of Allied prisoners from Stalag Luft III in Sagan, Germany (now Poland) was attempted.
Of the 76 Allied airmen who broke out, 50 were later executed, only 3 successfully evaded capture. #WW2
Coincidentally, the 1940 Olympics were also due to be held in Tokyo. The games were rescheduled to Finland, before being cancelled altogether when war broke out.
