A snapshot of our totally failed governance:

2 crore 60 lakh kids out of school. The highest in the world. More than India and China, which have 5 times our population.

78% of 10-year olds cannot read two sentences properly.

40 % kids are mentally and physically stunted.

2nd highest neo-natal mortality in the world, equal to South Sudan.

The highest population growth rate in Asia outside of Afghanistan and equal to the worst in Africa.

10 crore 50 lakh (40%) Pakistanis living under poverty according to the World Bank

Government schools not being able to teach adequately anywhere with Sindh’s school worst in the nation.

No water in much of Karachi for years now. No collection of garbage. Roads marked with potholes. Basic civic facilities remain a distant dream.

No breathable air in Lahore for 3 months every year. Citizens of Lahore lose about 5 years of their life expectancy due to this air pollution. This is now expanding to other cities of Punjab and KP.

Crime worsening across Pakistan. Police largely either ineffective or corrupt.

And yet:

We have the highest rates of electricity and gas not just in South Asia but across richer gas-importing countries such as South Africa, Thailand, etc.

We have some of the highest income tax and sales tax rates in the world, with tax on salaried individuals of 38.5%, on business individuals of 49.5, and on companies of 59%.

We have sales tax of 18% on most everything you buy so that poor end up paying a larger fraction of their incomes in sales tax than the rich.

We still have large federal deficits that increase our debt and mortgage our future.

We have public sector companies losing about Rs 700 billion annually.

Our economic growth remains so low that we aren’t able to absorb all the people entering the labour market every year, thus increasing unemployment and despondency. And faster growth only leads to inflation and devaluation.

On the other hand:

PPP has been in power in Sindh for 16 consecutive years. PMLN has been in power for 12.5 of the last 16 years in Punjab. PTI has been in power for 11 of the last 16 years. What have these parties achieved in their provinces even when flushed with cash from your taxes?

These three parties have also shared power in the federal government during the last 16 years. What have they got to show for it?

And still:

We sit today with total breakdown of our politics. Our capital is closed today, as it was yesterday. Intercity travel in Punjab has become impossible. Flights from Islamabad airport are being cancelled.

But even when things become normal again, politics will still be broken. Completely broken. Politics is now only for achieving and maintaining power. Not for public service. There are no moral redlines left in politics. Stealing elections is not dishonourable anymore. Financial corruption is being normalised across all three parties.

Yet we are not willing to admit that our governance has failed our people completely and we need a new governance model.

Please remember: Nothing we can do and no party in power will succeed, unless we change our governance model.
