On behalf of the @MarrowDonorDay task force of World Marrow Donor Association @WMDA_office, I'm excited to share our plans to create an engaging 24hr live stream dedicated to stem cell donation. This thread explains World Marrow Donor Day, the live stream & how to get involved /1
Take a minute to watch this fun and playful video on Stem Cell Registration by my wonderful aunt and uncle - Get Swabbed and #SaveALife!

Meet Ameilia.
Ameilia is a 10-year-old girl who has acute myeloid leukemia. She needs an unrelated stem cell donor to get better, but due to her Indigenous background, she does not have a match.
Meet Ollie.
Ollie was diagnosed with anaplastic large cell lymphoma in late 2019. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Ollie was unable to receive stem cells from three perfectly-matched anonymous donors. Instead, he received stem cells from his half-matched sister, Abby.
You are all amazing! Thank you.

@awareness_stem @CanadasLifeline Thank you for the update, so happy for Tanner and wishing him the best! Way to go Teemu - a 17 year old lifesaving stem cell hero!
We need to diversify our stem cell registry for people just like 7 year old Tanner! You can make a difference! Get Swabbed and #savealife!
@CanadasLifeline
This is Tanner. He is in need of a life saving stem cell transplant. Only 1.3% of Canadian blood services stem cell donors are indigenous. We need to reach the indigenous community to help save Tanners life! Retweet and click the link in our bio to help us find him a donor ❤️
Did you know Canada falls below international standard target of 80% donor availability. Canadians are passionate about joining the registry but 50% fail to follow through with the donation process. We can do better! @CTVNews

@ShellShock11C @Cmdr_Hadfield@swabtheworldnow@CanadasLifeline Stem cells only save lives if a recipient's body accepts them. They need to be matched for best recipient survivability. Stem cell matching relies on typing which is highly influenced by ethnic background. See the linked article for more info!

@WendellWard3@Cmdr_Hadfield@swabtheworldnow@CanadasLifeline Not discrimination, rather a disparity or disadvantage for patients with ethnically diverse backgrounds. Dr. Wong, in the article below, highlights that 80-90% of donors are Caucasian.
