Jean Nlemvo, 63, has avoided prison after being caught transporting almost £50,000 worth of cocaine hidden beneath his driver's seat in a Sainsbury's carrier bag, having agreed to deliver the Class A drugs for just £75.
Nlemvo, of Windsor Street, Toxteth, was stopped on the M62 while travelling from Manchester to Liverpool on October 15, 2024. Police searched his car the following day and discovered an orange Sainsbury's bag containing a cardboard box with 485g of cocaine hidden beneath the driver's seat.
The cocaine was 82% pure and valued at between £19,400 and £48,500. Prosecutor Jonathan Keane told Liverpool Crown Court that Nlemvo claimed he didn't know what cocaine was after being detained. However, investigators examining his iPhone discovered messages relating to the drug delivery.
Nlemvo admitted possession of cocaine with intent to supply on the day he was due to stand trial. His barrister, Matthew O'Neill, said financial difficulties had contributed to his involvement and argued that he had been exploited, describing his role as that of a courier rather than a direct seller.
The court heard that a priest provided a character reference for Nlemvo, described by his defence as a hard-working family man who attended church weekly. Recorder Mark Shepherd said he was a perfect man for an organised crime group to use, questioning why a 63-year-old churchgoer with children at university would risk prison for £75.
On Friday, October 16, 2026, at Liverpool Crown Court, Nlemvo was sentenced to three years imprisonment, suspended for 18 months. He must also complete 200 hours of unpaid work and comply with a 12-month probation requirement. The judge said he had taken an extraordinary risk and come very, very close to immediate imprisonment.
