#DisabilityAwarenessMonth helps in subsiding the stereotypical mindset of the society, hence providing vast opportunities for everyone to get involved in creating a positive, inclusive society for all. We all should make an effort to move past #awareness & into #acceptance
It’s important to take #awareness to the next level-ACTION! Building the knowledge & skills of students, families & members of the community increases the likelihood that inclusive practices will become integrated into the framework of the community. #DisabilityAwarenessMonth
#Awareness is the first step in promoting positive change. Once people are able to recognize the promise of inclusive education, they can begin to seek the knowledge and skills necessary to realize their goals. #DisabilityAwarenessMonth
It is all about the importance of being comfortable in your own skin and making the conscious decision to be yourself, especially around people with disabilities. #Inclusion
No matter the differences between people, it is always better to treat others the way you want to be treated, & this is especially true when interacting w/ friends, co-workers, & other Hoosiers who live with disabilities. #DisabilityAwarenessMonth
Strive for a world that views disability not as a hindrance but as unique attributes that can be seen as powerful assets if given the right opportunities. Focus not on the differences of people w/ disabilities but the talent of the individual. #DisabilityAwarenessMonth
Disable the label. Defining people only by their disability can be hurtful and limiting. But when we see others for who they really are, we can learn a lot about true character. #DisabilityAwarenessMonth
#DisabilityAwareness programs are influential to the overall environment of a school; educating students so they may become better citizens. When you free your mind & see the potential inside everyone, you’ll expand your horizons ... and your circle of friends. #InclusionMatters
To help beautify your community, start by planting the seeds of understanding. When you appreciate the unique gifts inside people of all abilities, everyone grows. #DisabilityAwarenessMonth
Children grow from encountering a variety of experiences. Inclusive settings offer students many incidental opportunities to learn useful skills, such as following typical daily routines, figuring out multiple ways to solve problems, sharing stories & communicating effectively.
Today is #WorldDownSyndromeDay People across the globe will wear their most colorful socks to celebrate people w/ Down Syndrome & remind us all to celebrate the things that make us each unique. Help us foster a community that celebrates #differences & #inclusion#RockYourSocks
Communities thrive when we all take an active part. When you embrace your community & the people who live there–everyone feels at home. Be a force in your community in promoting the #independence#integration & #inclusion of all people w/disabilities. #DisabilityAwarenessMonth
The best way to overcome these misconceptions is to bring people w/ & w/out disabilities together in shared activities.Inclusive schools provide the opportunity for all students to develop the attitudes, values & skills needed to live & work alongside others in a diverse society.
By growing up & learning together in school, students w/ varied abilities, interests, & backgrounds experience diversity as a community norm. Many people in our society have misconceptions about persons w/ disabilities.
The talents & gifts of students w/ disabilities are varied, as are the talents & gifts of all students. Students w/ disabilities have so much to offer their peers, teachers, & schools. #disabilityawarenessmonth#InclusionMatters
... allow extra room for wheelchairs to maneuver in crowded public areas; not all mobility impairments are readily visible – if someone seems unsteady, help that person get access to a handrail or bench; don’t interrupt – some people take longer to express a complete thought.
It would serve us all to understand each other better: if a person isn’t making eye contact, don’t assume it’s rudeness, assume that the person is listening respectfully; be aware that lighting, sound & smells may be overwhelming & cause a person to leave a room suddenly ...
... if someone is in your personal space or speaking too loudly to you, politely request boundaries; don’t assume the other person is deliberately trying to offend. Every person has different sensitivities & personal boundaries ...
