Great work from @GroundLordLtd, clearing steep slopes of scrub at Winter Hill. Now the raking begins to lower soil fertility and encourage more specialist chalk grassland plants #conservation#chalkgrassland#wildflowers
Step 1 of priority habitat restoration is taking place on Winter Hill until Wednesday. Contractors using a robomulcher are pushing back scrub on steeper slopes than are possible by hand, making more space for chalk grassland to re-establish. #conservation#snow#view
Spring blossom is incredibly important for our early #pollinators. As blackthorn becomes green with leaves, so begins the new wave of flowers from plants such as hawthorn, elder and crab apple. #BlossomWatch#NaturePhotography#wildflowerhour
Working hard replacing the fence at Widbrook Common before the cattle return. The posts are sustainably sourced, untreated sweet chestnut - naturally resistant to rot. #sunshine#cows#environment
Experienced contractors have begun pollarding selected willows at Cock Marsh. Thanks to Copas farms for helping with access, due to ground conditions this was impossible earlier in the year. Please observe signage and path closures. See the attached poster for further info.
Spring is coming at Cock Marsh. We spotted the white form of common dog violet, a scarlet elf cup and lesser celandines. #wildflowers#fungi#sunshine#spring
Whilst these works are being carried out across Maidenhead and Cookham Commons, there may be restricted access along footpaths and roads to keep everyone safe. Thank you for your patience and cooperation.

At Cock Marsh, we have started felling ash #trees that are suffering heavily from ash dieback. In the summer these trees were identified to be in very poor condition. Timber will either be extracted to off-set the cost of the project or be left as all important deadwood habitat.
It looks like the litter bugs have persisted whatever the restrictions. So thank you to the local community and our dedicated litter picking volunteers for fighting the good fight and conserving our #Countryside@MCC_NT through these difficult times. #volunteers@KeepBritainTidy
Our #volunteers have been doing some hedge laying recently. A traditional countryside skill that is rarely seen these days. Not only does it look good, it is also of great benefit to our native wildlife. Keep up the good work folks #nature#wildlife#Countryside#ecosystem
Our volunteers are always up for a challenge. They couldn't wait to get stuck in to some path repairs after heavy summer downpours had washed away parts of this path. The results were, as always, fantastic. Good job team! #volunteering#conservation
@nellyboyt Good spot and a great photo of Jelly ear/wood ear fungus (Auricularia auricula-judae). Keep your eyes peeled for more fungi as there is a lot out across the commons.
Even with older eyes which have seen the world, there is still an inquisitive curiosity with awe and wonder due to our #natural world's #kindness - an incredible #journey of learning through our experiences @nationaltrust
Amongst knapweeds; wildflowers and grasses; this #perfectpicture is so peaceful; yet so meaningful. With our vista's greenery enhanced against clear blue skies; our volunteers splendid efforts with our late summer grass cut are going well. A #perfectday with the @nationaltrust
The darkened skies, the atmospheric views, those moments of serenity and tranquility, Winter Hill is a sight to behold. Our volunteers will continue with their late summer grass cut again this week, however in the meantime enjoy a quiet moment to yourself with this beautiful view
@carollong454@nationaltrust Thanks @carollong454 that's a great picture, our livestock cattle are certainly a special feature of our Special Places. I hope that you continue to enjoy our conservation work and everything we do throughout the Trust.
The inquisitive nature of our Commoners' cattle at Cock Marsh & Widbrook Common certainly amused our @MCC_NT volunteers following their return to volunteering. Our team removed the invasive species of both Common Ragwort & Spear Thistle from our arable pastures. @nationaltrust
