#WATCH | Leh, the capital of the Union Territory of Ladakh, is adopting innovative solutions to tackle waste management challenges in its harsh, high-altitude terrain. In 2020, a solar-powered solid waste processing plant with a capacity of 30 tonnes per day was launched, aiming for 100% source segregation and 90% material recovery.

The administration has also set up a decentralised Faecal Sludge Treatment Plant (FSTP), treating over 6 million litres of waste and earning the AMRUT Technology Challenge Award, significantly improving sanitation and groundwater safety.

To support sanitation workers in extreme winters, a dedicated wash facility has been established, ensuring their health, hygiene, and dignity.

In another landmark step, Leh has reclaimed 20.26 hectares of land through dumpsite remediation, with part of it earmarked for afforestation.
