A free press is essential to democracy. Across the world, journalists are threatened, forced into exile, detained or killed for doing their job, as we have seen in Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine and in conflicts in the Middle East and Africa. 

Disinformation and intimidation continue to undermine independent journalism and the public’s right to know.

The EU will continue to defend press freedom at home and around the world.

I also recall that freedom of assembly is a fundamental right Türkiye has committed to as a member of the Council of Europe and as a candidate country to the European Union.
