According to multiple international reports, MTV has officially shut down its remaining 24‑hour music channels worldwide, ending a 44‑year era. MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV, and MTV Live all went dark on December 31 across the U.K., with additional shutdowns confirmed in Australia, Poland, France, Brazil, and more regions.

MTV Music signed off by airing “Video Killed the Radio Star,” the first video the network ever played in 1981. The main MTV channel will continue, but focused on reality TV instead of music.

The shutdown closes the last chapter of MTV’s music‑video legacy, a legacy that once helped push metal into the mainstream through artists like Def Leppard, Judas Priest, Metallica, Pantera, and the influence of Headbangers Ball.
