Because healthcare among the Mayan population is minimal, sometimes correctable childhood vision issues are not caught in time.

Children can suppress vision in an eye. If this is caught early, it can be improved with patching or glasses. If it is not caught by 10-11, vision loss is permanent.

The Hope Worldwide Guatemala Brigade serves in a town called Chimaltenango. Its population is about 65% Mayan. Generally, the Mayan community is underserved when it comes to healthcare. Ten years ago, I left a career in public relations and marketing communications. By accident or providence, I ended up in optometry. From the first day all those years ago, I knew this was my second act. I loved being able to work directly with the people I was helping instead of my impact being more abstract in a corporate setting.

Did you know the Guatemalan government only spends about $97 per person on healthcare? Comparatively, the United States government spends $7,825 per person.
