Mojo (a deemed Covid cluster) has just announced they will begin in-person dining starting the 20th. Dining halls throughout campus will start allowing small amounts of in-person dining eventually working up to 400 seats across campus.
This raises an important question of why Umich, with its extensive medical capacity, isn’t able to test their directly exposed workers but can have them go to the city over and get tested in a parking lot in a matter of minutes. #UMMakesUsSick
One dining worker who was directly exposed to a positive case in their unit was denied a test from UHS. This worker explained to them that they have a second job and see many people a day so there is high risk of exposure. Still denied a test although they were exposed on campus.
They were informed to just quarantine for 14 days (without pay) and without truly knowing if they had it. They also weren’t contacted by the tracer until ~8 hours after they learned of exposure. This worker was thankfully able to get tested at a location in Ypsi.
One of our demands is adequate PPE. Dining workers are not given masks and are required to bring in their own. We were only just recently given enough face shields for all student workers, however many chefs behind the scenes aren’t required to wear shield.
Contact tracers can only do so much and often times overlook many other people that were directly/indirectly in contact. Many workers in mojo took it upon themselves to self quarantine and get tested without pay, against management’s directions.

Unfortunately this has been the case with a lot of dining workers, even those being contacted by contact tracers. This is the exact reason why we are fighting.
In jarring and horrible news, there has been a dining hall worker that has tested positive for COVID. Here is a statement from a worker. MDining should be ashamed.
Students gathered to commemorate the lives lost to COVID-19, the end of the graduate student strike and their loss of trust in the University's administration. https://t.co/SztU6IvK1s
