The FT investigation raises serious concerns, but it gives a very one‑sided view of the UAE’s role in Africa and ignores the scale of its positive economic impact.
Over the past decade, the UAE has become the fourth‑largest global investor in Africa and the top Gulf investor, with total investments now above 100–110 billion USD. Around 59–60 billion USD has gone into infrastructure, energy, logistics, agriculture and services, and roughly 70 billion USD has been directed to green and renewable energy projects.
In East and the Horn of Africa, UAE‑linked entities have invested about 47.4 bn USD in twelve countries (including 19.3 bn in energy, 11.9 bn in agriculture and 7.3 bn in ports). In South Africa, UAE companies have launched 28 projects worth 23.6 bn USD, creating around 6,200 jobs. Overall UAE–Africa non‑energy trade has risen from 20 bn USD in 2012 to about 60 bn USD in 2022, with total trade close to 80–85 bn USD by 2023.
On gold, Sudanese exports are a small fraction (around 1–2%) of the UAE’s gold trade, and the country has tightened rules on responsible sourcing and anti‑money‑laundering. It is incorrect to claim that the UAE’s gold market is built on Sudan’s war economy.
Finally, between 21,000 and 30,000 African companies are registered and operating in the UAE, using it as a hub to reach global markets. For many African governments and businesses, the UAE is not a destabilising “imperial” actor, but a key source of long‑term capital, infrastructure and market access that supports their own development priorities.

يُجسد اللقاء الذي جمع سمو الأمير خالد بن سلمان، وزير الدفاع في المملكة العربية السعودية، بسمو الشيخ منصور بن زايد آل نهيان، نائب رئيس الدولة نائب رئيس مجلس الوزراء رئيس ديوان الرئاسة، حقيقة العلاقة الاستراتيجية التي تجمع الإمارات والسعودية، والتي تشكل أحد أهم ركائز الأمن والاستقرار في الخليج والمنطقة.

فالسعودية ودولة الإمارات هما رمانتا ميزان المنظومة الخليجية؛ فهما أكبر اقتصادين عربيين وخليجيين، وأبرز قوتين عسكريتين في المنطقة. وقد أثبت تحالفهما، على مدى السنوات، دوره المحوري في حماية أمن الخليج واستقرار المنطقة، بدءًا من التحرك المشترك لحفظ أمن مملكة البحرين عام 2011 في مواجهة أعمال الشغب المدعومة من إيران، مرورًا بدعم مصر في مواجهة تنظيم الإخوان المسلمين منذ عام 2013، وصولًا إلى العديد من المحطات المفصلية التي عززت الأمن العربي.

ويأتي هذا اللقاء في توقيت إقليمي بالغ الحساسية، ليبعث برسالة طمأنة لكل خليجي يدرك أهمية التنسيق الإماراتي السعودي، ودوره في مواجهة التحديات المتسارعة التي تشهدها المنطقة.

ومن الواضح أن الآلة الإعلامية التابعة للنظام الإيراني تحاول منذ أسابيع بث الفرقة وإحداث التباعد بين البلدين، إدراكًا منها لما يمثله هذا التنسيق من ركيزة أساسية للأمن الخليجي. لكن الوعي الخليجي كفيل بإفشال هذه المحاولات، والوقوف صفًا واحدًا أمام التحديات المشتركة.

قد تختلف وجهات النظر في بعض الملفات، وهذا أمر طبيعي في العلاقات بين الدول، لكن يبقى المصير المشترك، ووحدة الصف الخليجي، والتنسيق الاستراتيجي بين الإمارات والسعودية، أساسًا لا ينبغي التفريط فيه مهما كانت الظروف. 🇦🇪🇸🇦

(رويترز) – خفّفت وزارة التجارة الأمريكية، اليوم الجمعة، ضوابط التصدير المفروضة على دولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة، ما يجعل تصدير المعدات العسكرية وبعض الأقمار الصناعية التجارية والمركبات الفضائية إليها أكثر سهولة، وذلك وفقًا لإشعار نشرته الحكومة الأمريكية في السجل الفيدرالي.

كما يتيح القرار لحكومة دولة الإمارات والشركات المعتمدة لديها الوصول إلى منتجات الحوسبة المتقدمة دون الحاجة إلى الحصول على تراخيص تصدير، بحسب الإشعار.

The UAE attracted a record $48.2 billion in foreign direct investment in 2025, a 6 percent increase on the year, ranking ninth in the world and first in the Middle East, according to UNCTAD’s newly released World Investment Report.

The gain was driven largely by greenfield investment, new projects built from the ground up rather than acquisitions. By this measure the country now ranks second in the world by number of greenfield projects, with 1,562 recorded over the year. The inflows were broad-based rather than narrow, led by manufacturing, communications and real estate, pointing to an economy attracting capital across its productive base rather than in any single sector.

The UAE is not only a destination for capital, but a major exporter of it. The country ranked among the world’s top ten sources of outbound investment, deploying $63 billion abroad in 2025. Emirati capital sits behind some of the year’s largest projects, from the $34 billion Infinity Power renewable venture in Mauritania and the $24 billion Ras El Hikma development in Egypt to digital infrastructure investments by MGX in France and Damac in the United States.

Together the numbers describe a country that has become a genuine two-way hub for global capital: both a destination investors compete for and a source of financing building infrastructure across three continents.

وجاءت هذه الزيادة مدفوعة إلى حد كبير بالاستثمار في المشاريع التأسيسية، أي المشاريع الجديدة التي تُبنى من الأساس بدلاً من عمليات الاستحواذ. وبهذا المقياس باتت الدولة تحتل المرتبة الثانية عالمياً من حيث عدد المشاريع التأسيسية، بإجمالي 1,562 مشروعاً خلال العام. وجاءت هذه التدفقات واسعة القاعدة لا محصورة في قطاع بعينه، تتصدرها الصناعة التحويلية والاتصالات والعقارات، بما يشير إلى اقتصاد يجتذب رأس المال عبر مختلف قطاعاته الإنتاجية لا في مجال واحد.

ولا تقتصر الإمارات على كونها وجهة لرأس المال، بل هي مُصدِّر رئيسي له. فقد جاءت ضمن أكبر عشرة مصادر للاستثمار الخارجي في العالم، إذ استثمرت 63 مليار دولار خارج حدودها في عام 2025. ويقف رأس المال الإماراتي خلف عدد من أضخم مشاريع العام، من مشروع “إنفينيتي باور” للطاقة المتجددة في موريتانيا بقيمة 34 مليار دولار، ومشروع رأس الحكمة العقاري في مصر بقيمة 24 مليار دولار، إلى استثمارات البنية التحتية الرقمية التي نفذتها “إم جي إكس” في فرنسا و”داماك” في الولايات المتحدة.

The UAE joining the Mercosur Summit marks a notable shift in its trade strategy.

The CEPA program began by opening single markets: India, Turkey, Indonesia. The ambition now is entire blocs.

A deal with Mercosur would reach one of the world’s largest trading blocs in a single agreement: nearly 300 million people, more than $2 trillion in combined GDP, and the agricultural and commodities heartland of South America, anchored by Brazil and Argentina. Non-oil trade between the UAE and Mercosur countries reached $6.2 billion in 2025.

Running in parallel, the negotiations with the European Union, launched last year, aim at the first comprehensive economic partnership agreement the bloc would strike with a Gulf state.

The scale is already real. The UAE has concluded 37 CEPAs, 17 of which have come into force, with the Ukraine agreement the latest to take effect today.

While much of the world closes in on itself and raises tariffs, the UAE is moving in the opposite direction: opening new markets, connecting regions, and making itself the connective tissue of global trade.

Countries were the first phase. Blocs are the next.
